Rape of Nanking 2009-10 Sem.1 HomeThis is a featured page

Welcome to the Nanking Ant Farm (meaning I get to watch you like an old fashion ant farm)

Find your class on the side panel.

How this works:

1. You will explore the events of the Rape of Nanking through the eyes of a fictional or non-fiction individual.
2. You can choose anyone FEASIBLE who would have been living/occupying Nanking, China. The name must be accurate and not silly (E.g. A chines name that is a play on words).

3. This purpose of this assignment is to get a clear and deep understanding of the establishment of the Japanese Empire and a glimpse at the psychologhical and historical relevance of the Nanking massacre.
4. You will be able to collaborate with others in the class to make a series of journals, letters, and other forms of media. You MUST keep your ideas historically accurate and think critically throughout this project.
5. Your must have a least one partner throughout, but can add more.

Example Page

Using a Wiki for collaboration: YOU must be apart in at least ONE other characters wiki. Please be sure to make them aware by leaving a comment on their bottom of their page.

DO NOT FORGET THE 6 Rules of the Ant Farm

1. No murdering other students' characters--you CAN murder other students' characters' relations.

2. When you interact with another student's character or character's family member, you MUST notify them via a comment on their character's wiki.

3. You have to suffer the consequences of your actions in all following diaries. If you kill somebody in diary 1, it can't disappear in diary 2. Keep the story going.

4. There should be a realistic, convincing reason for all actions you take. Take risks and show the tensions and madness of this period, yes; but be careful--don't be silly; be convincing.

5. You can always converse and interact with anyone as long as it is realistic and feasible.

6. If you read something that bothers you, you privately inform the teacher. Your privacy will be protected.

Grading Criteria per entry:

  • 10 Credibility / Realism: Are your character's actions believable to the reader? Do we understand the reasons he/she does what she does?
  • 10 Historical Accuracy: Do you include convincing and accurate historical details in your "historical fiction"
  • 5pts Creativity: Are your character, your events, and your writing imaginative, full of images, drama?
  • 5 pts Collaboration: Are you giving good feedback--based on the feedback questions--to your assigned peer review partners
